Team Capability

Anyone who has ever watched an 'all star' sports team play knows that a team of champions is not necessarily a champion team. There are three elements to a team:

  • the people in it
  • its culture
  • its leadership

Our approach to team capability looks at these three elements.

We identify five levels of team capability maturity, from fragmented to optimal. As part of our Balanced Scorecard approach to performance measurement, we give a Team Capability Scorecard. And for high reliability organisations where quality, safety and reliability are critical, we have the Safety Capability Scorecard.

People

We provide a sophisticated understanding of your organisational climate (whether you're big or small) focusing on the drivers of performance. We use a range of tools centred on our climate surveys, but also including focus groups, interviews and team development sessions.

We are strongly influenced by the work of contemporary management thinkers, including Peter Senge, Charles Handy and Chris Argyris. We help executives implement and manage change, through one-on-one coaching and through group facilitation (see the case study below). With experience and skills honed on operations with the Australian Defence Force we bring a unique perspective to leadership and management in a competitive and challenging environment.

We also run tailored leadership and management professional development sessions for individuals and groups from beginning managers to senior managers - see our professional development page.

Case study

In a large organisation (10,000 employees, $1 billion budget) that had difficulty implementing a corporate philosophy focused on outcomes rather than activity, we convened a day-long roundtable of selected senior managers to seek ways forward. The immediate outcome was a ‘how to’ guide disseminated to all managers under the hand of the CEO. Most of the senior managers are now members of the organisation’s executive group.

Leaders

We work with leaders and managers to help them get the best out of their day in a challenging environment. Our evidence-based coaching draws on wide experience with leaders across a range of organisations including operational experience with the Australian Defence Force.
